Bail has been set in Clinton County court at $20,000 for a 27-year-old Wamac man arrested on felony domestic battery charges following a multi-agency manhunt.
Joshua Benjamin was being sought by police for an alleged late November domestic battery when the alleged victim called police Wednesday saying she believed Benjamin was hiding in the attic of her home.
Police believe Benjamin was able to get out of the home while officers were investigating, but when they went to his mother’s home to try and locate him Benjamin jumped out a window of her residence on South Cherry.
Wamac and Centralia police, along with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit then began a search for Benjamin, ultimately tracking him west on 16th Street from Cherry before losing the track on Dover Street.
The search was temporarily suspended, but after a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy received a tip that Benjamin was hiding in a house on East 5th, law enforcement surrounded the home and took Benjamin into custody without further incident.
Benjamin is next scheduled to appear in Clinton County court December 20, for a first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
He was sentenced in August 2016 in Marion County court to 3 years in prison after his probation was revoked from an aggravated battery conviction. In that case he was accused of striking a Wamac Police officer in June 2016.
