A 39-year-old Albers man has been sentenced to 25-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after he pleaded guilty to one of nine felony charges against him stemming from an armed standoff in 2016 with Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies.

Gary T. Walthes, was originally charged with two Class X felony counts of attempted First Degree Murder, Class X armed violence, Class 1 felony aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm, Class 3 felony aggravated battery to a peace officer, Class 3 felony production of between 20 and 50 cannabis plants, Class 2 felony possession or use of a firearm by a felon, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts misdemeanor child endangerment.

Walthes pleaded guilty Wednesday to the Class X armed violence charge in exchange for all other charges being dismissed.

According to reports, on the morning of March 14, 2016, Walthes had a brief standoff the with Clinton County Sheriff’s deputies who had gone to his residence to serve a search warrant, obtained due to suspicion that he was growing marijuana in his home.

One of three children in the home allowed the officers to enter but Walthes was hiding in a closet. When officers ordered him to come out, he reportedly pointed a handgun at a detective and pulled the trigger. A bullet was not chambered, however, and despite holding a full magazine, the gun didn’t fire.

Officers quickly exited and set up a perimeter around the home. Walthes exited the home a few minutes later and surrendered before being taken into custody.

He has been held in the Clinton County Jail since his arrest, with bail set at $750,000.
