A 22-year-old Mt. Vernon woman was arrested Monday by detectives with the Mt. Vernon Police Department on a charge of drug induced homicide.

Stephanie Garcia was arrested in connection with the November 12 overdose death of 40-year-old Lavelta Washington in the 600 block of South 24th Street in Mt. Vernon.

The investigation is ongoing, with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office assisting MVPD. Garcia is being held in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.

Garcia is the second person arrested in connection with Washington’s death. Last week Mt. Vernon police arrested 25-year-old Zia Flowers with Class X felony drug induced homicide. She remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $200,000.
