Shotgun season for deer kicks off this weekend and the State Department of Natural Resources is urging hunters to make safety a priority.

There were 29 reported hunting accidents last year in Illinois and 23 involved a hunter falling out of a tree stand says I-D-N-R spokesperson Ed Cross.

Cross says the harness should have a fall arrest system and you should check straps before using. Hunters are also advised to keep an eye on the weather, carry a cell phone, wear bright orange, and to always point a firearm in a safe direction.
Cross also has this advice.

The first shotgun season begins a half hour before sunrise this Friday and runs until a half hour after sunset on Sunday.
