A car driven by a Salem woman caught fire Saturday night shortly after striking a deer on Route 37 near Green Road north of Mt. Vernon.

According to Jefferson Rural firefighters, Connie Seymore struck the deer just before 8 p.m. She was able to pull into a parking lot before the fire broke out in the engine compartment of her vehicle.

When firefighters arrived flames were shooting from under the hood. They were able to contain the fire to the engine compartment, but it was heavily damaged.

Seymore was uninjured. The deer was killed in the crash.
