An audit filed Friday by accountant Dennis Uhls shows former Zeigler City Treasurer Ryan Thorpe stole over $315,000 from the city between Jan. 1, 2013 through Aug. 31 of this year. That’s according to the Southern Illinoisan.

A federal grand jury recently returned a five count indictment charging Thorpe with wire fraud and embezzlement from a local government during his time as city treasurer. The indictment also seeks forfeiture of numerous items Thorpe is alleged to have purchased with embezzled funds.

Uhls’ report also suggests that city finance commissioner Jim Flood be reassigned due to his close ties with Thorpe and allegedly intimidates city employees. Zeigler Mayor Dennis Mitchell says he has spoken with city street commissioner Dorothy Bagwell-O’Brien and public safety commissioner Virgil Gunter about being Flood’s replacement. A decision has not been made at this time.

Thorpe is set to be arraigned Thursday at the Federal Courthouse in Benton.
