Two Injured in three-vehicle crash on I-57 near Mt. Vernon

JEFFERSON COUNTY — Two people were injured in a three-vehicle accident south of Mt. Vernon on Interstate 57 on Sunday afternoon.

Illinois State Police reports indicate that a semi operated by 52-year-old James E. Dennison of Iuka was traveling southbound on I-57 near milepost 89.9 in front of a Toyota operated by 52-year-old Tod M. Watson of Murray, Kent. As Dennison and Watson slowed for a traffic backup due to construction, a Freightliner operated 30-year-old Isic Mirza of Caledonia, Mich., failed to slow and struck the rear of the Toyota which then struck the rear of the other semi at 2:07 p.m.

Watson and his passenger, 24-year-old Shannon Watson, were both transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

None of the lanes of I-57 had to be closed for the subsequent investigation or clean up. Mirza was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
