According to court records, Cody J. Hawkins, of Taylorville, was arrested Tuesday when he attempted to enter the prison for work. Charging information against Hawkins alleges he brought Vicodin into the prison for an inmate in exchange for $500.

He was formally charged Wednesday with Class 1 felony bringing contraband into a penal institution, Class 3 felony possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, and Class 3 felony official misconduct.

The state’s attorney’s office recused itself from the case Wednesday and filed a motion for the appointment of a special prosecutor in the case. An appellate prosecutor was subsequently appointed.

Hawkins remains in the Fayette County Jail, with a first appearance with council scheduled for October 13. Hawkins indicated in court Wednesday that he will hire a private attorney.
