MT. VERNON — A Chicago man seeking a new trial and subsequent sentence saw those motions denied in Jefferson County Court on Friday.

Court records indicate that the defense attempted to convey that the original guilty verdicts were not supported by sufficient evidence. The motion also claimed that the court made errors in the previous trial.

Murphy was originally sentenced last year to 90 years in prison on first-degree murder and aggravated arson charges in the death of Tamara Malin in June 2015. The combined sentence was the maximum available on each charge.

The defense tried to challenge that the sentences were excessive.

Judge Jerry Crisel acknowledged the points, but declared that the sentence was appropriate and another trial unnecessary.
