MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon City Council’s discussion of a one percent sales tax to replace the meter fee will indeed be on the agenda of Monday’s City Council Meeting.

The council met for a workshop on Friday to consider replacing the meter fee with the sales tax to fund water and sewer improvements. The sales tax increase and elimination of the meter fee will be on the agenda as a first reading.

In order for the city to begin receiving collections from the sales tax increase from the state by Jan. 1, 2018–the matter must be approved this month.

Also on the agenda the council will:
-Discuss bid results for the Marteeny Street Sidewalk Project;
-Request permission to apply for the Illinois Department of Transportation Economic Development Tourism Grant for North 44th Street Construction;
-Request permission to close streets for Mt. Vernon Fall Fest;
-Discuss a resolution requesting IDOT to close portions of Illinois Highways 15 and 37 for the Fall Fest Parade;
-Hear a second reading on amending the open leaf burning ordinance;
-Hear a second reading on declaring property at 117 North Sixth Street as surplus; and
-Discuss a possible property rezoning at 14179 North Tolle Lane from Flood Plain to Low Density Residential.
