MT. VERNON — It took a little more than two hours Wednesday for a Jefferson County jury to find a Mt. Vernon man guilty of meth charges and not guilty of an armed robbery charge.

Court reports indicate 49-year-old Michael A. Jones was found guilty of possession of less than 5 grams of meth with the intent to deliver, a Class 2 felony, and possession of less than 5 grams of meth, a Class 3 felony.

The acquittal came on a Class X felony charge of armed robbery. That charge in connection with an alleged armed robbery of a confidential police source during a controlled drug buy on May 23. The alleged victim was given money by police to purchase drugs from Jones in his Mt. Vernon residence. The source was allegedly robbed inside the home. The buy was controlled by the Illinois State Police/Southern Illinois Drug Task Force.

Jones is currently held in the Jefferson County Justice center on a bond of $77,000. Jones is due back in Jefferson County Court on Oct. 3 at 1:30 for a status hearing on sentencing.
