FAYETTE COUNTY — A 24-year-old St. Peter man was formally charged in Fayette County Court Monday with two counts first degree murder in connection with the shooting death Friday of Joshua K. Smith in Ramsey.
Alexander R. Beccue appeared to have fainted during his Monday morning arraignment resulting in the court hearing being delayed temporarily while the county nurse checked Beccue.
He ultimately returned to court where he was charged with two counts first degree murder, one count of possession of a stolen vehicle and one count of unlawful possession of weapon by a felon.
Beccue’s family requested time to hire a private attorney and he’s next scheduled to appear in court August 30 for a preliminary hearing in the case.
Beccue was arrested a few hours after the shooting following a brief manhunt. He was taken into custody without incident on a warrant charging him with Smith’s attempted murder.
However, Smith died from his injuries later in the day and the charges were elevated to first degree murder. Bail had been set at $1 million. Prosecutors say there were witnesses to the shooting.
Beccue, who was also wanted on an outstanding Illinois Department of Corrections warrant at the time of his arrest for Smith’s murder, was transported after court Monday to the custody of IDOC.
