Peggy Sue Payne, 58, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 12:33 P.M. August 12, 2017 at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born September 1, 1958 to Robert “Bob” & Betty (Thomas) Hayes. She married James E. Payne on April 15, 1979 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Peggy is survived by her parents, Robert “Bob” and Betty Hayes of Mount Vernon, Illinois; husband, James “Jim” Payne of Mount Vernon, Illinois; 2 daughters, Mandy Evans and husband, Todd of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Lindy Lansdowne and husband, Kyle of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Wyatt Evans, Sadie Evans, and Kennedy Bax; step-grandson, Karter Lansdowne; brother, Mike Hayes and wife, Julie of Mount Vernon, Illinois; sister, Nancy LeGrand and husband, John of Conway, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents and great-grandparents.

Peggy worked as an administrative secretary for Mount Vernon Township High School. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School in 1976. She was a member of the group referred to as the “’76 Chicks”. Peggy enjoyed spending time at the lake on the boat with her family, following her grandchildren’s various sport activities, and enjoyed being lovingly referred to as her grandchildren’s “Nana”. Peggy will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Phil Poe and Reverend Jesse Hinds officiating.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
