MT VERNON – A hit and run late last night in Mt. Vernon leave one pedestrian dead.

Just before 11pm officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department received a report of a car striking a pedestrian and then fleeing the scene. EMS arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, 30 year old Sharona R Monroe who originally fled the scene, turned herself into the MVPD Friday earlier this morning. She was taken into custody on preliminary charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving a Death. The case is currently being reviewed by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office and additional charges are possible.

Monroe has been incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set by a judge.

Monroe is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
