Judge Uncorks County Pop Tax

(Chicago, IL) — A Cook County judge is lifting the stay on the county’s penny-an-ounce tax on sweetened beverages. The Illinois Retail Merchants Association had filed suit against the tax, calling it confusing and vague. Judge Daniel Kubasiak had put on a lid on the tax that was supposed to take effect July 1st, but Friday removed the ban. It’s not clear when the tax on naturally and artificially sweetened drinks will start to be collected.
