(MT. VERNON, IL) — A Mt. Vernon man was arrested Tuesday and charged with burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia. A call to the Mt. Vernon Police Department led to the apprehension of 20 year old Daniel Smith. According to police reports, at approximately 2:21 p.m. Tuesday, a passerby reportedly observed Smith on Salem Road entering and exiting a vehicle at a residence and checking random mailboxes. Upon investigation, it was determined that items in Smith‘s possession coincided with items missing from a nearby vehicle. The witness provided a statement to authorities. Smith was taken into custody by the MVPD and transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center for the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
