(SALEM, IL) — A 31-year-old rural Salem man is in the Marion County Jail after he allegedly held is 1-year-old son in the bedroom of his home and threatened to kill himself and his family. Alexander Carroll was taken into custody after peacefully surrendering to Marion County Sheriff’s deputies. According to reports, deputies responded around 5 a.m. to Carroll’s Cross Road home to question him after his wife reported he had made threats to kill her, himself, and their children. After speaking briefly with deputies he allegedly ran into a bedroom and locked himself and the child inside. Carroll’s wife had told deputies he had a gun and reports indicate he may have fired a shot outside the home before deputies arrived. After Carroll locked himself in the bedroom, deputies took his wife and other children outside. Deputies spent more than an hour convincing Carroll to exit the room peacefully, and while he initially refused to give the 1-year-old to deputies, the child was found unharmed in the room after his father surrendered. Deputies did ultimately locate the gun and report Carroll was highly intoxicated when taken into custody. He was arrested for domestic battery and felony aggravated assault due to the alleged use of the gun.
