(SALEM, IL) — Authorities in Salem are saying that after investigation they’ve ruled out the possibility that a Chinese scholar kidnapped in Champaign last month was seen in Salem days after her abduction. After tracking down video surveillance from a location in Salem, local detectives traveled to Champaign Tuesday to meet with the parents of 26-year-old Yingying Zhang and have them view the videos. The parents reportedly said the woman in the videos was not their daughter. The same woman mistakenly identified by numerous people in Salem as the missing woman was reportedly seen a month before Zhang was abducted in Champaign. Calls were made to the FBI from multiple people in Salem who believed the Asian woman they saw selling jewelry in town June 16 was Zhang. Federal authorities have a man in custody for allegedly kidnapping Zhang. They say they believe her to be dead but have not located a body.
