UPDATE: Suspect was taken into custody just before midnight.

MOUNT VERNON — Mt. Vernon police are looking for a person of interest in a deadly shooting Saturday afternoon in the 700 block of South 25th Street.

Police say they are looking for Roderick Shondale Oats Jr., in connection with the shooting that took place around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of South 25th Street.

The name of the person killed has not been released.

Officers responded to the area in response to a call about shots fired. Shortly after they arrived they received a call from Good Samaritan Hospital reporting a person was in the emergency room with gunshot wounds. That person later died from their injuries.

MVPD brought in additional officers, detectives and a crime scene technician from the Illinois State Police to work on the investigation.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office, and State’s Attorney’s Office, are all assisting with the investigation.
