Three Arrested In Marion County

(SALEM, IL) — Three people were arrested Tuesday night after one of them sought a ride from a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy. According to reports, 33-year-old Ashley Eldridge, of Christopher, was seeking a ride Tuesday night on the 161 Extension, saying she had been walking for 5 hours. Eldridge reportedly told the deputy she was trying to get to a church up the road where she was going to be picked up by someone. As the deputy was driving her to the church she reportedly told him from the back seat of the cruiser that a car that just passed them was the car she was meeting. The deputy turned his cruiser around to catch the vehicle when he reportedly recognized it and that the 37-year-old driver Robert King, of Mt. Vernon, was driving while his license suspended. Upon reaching the vehicle the deputy also discovered that a 28-year-old passenger in the car, Jessi Irwin, of Salem, was wanted on an outstanding Marion County arrest warrant. Eldridge reportedly began acting strangely as a tow inventory was being conducted on the vehicle. She gave the deputy permission to search her purse where a drug pipe, two straws, and a length of rubber tubing were found. The items field tested positive for cocaine. As the tow inventory continued, the deputy allegedly found another drug pipe and length of tubing wrapped in a bandana, and a plastic container reportedly contained a white powder that field tested positive for cocaine. Irwin took responsibility for those items, claiming they were all hers. King agreed. He was charged with driving while license suspended. He posted bond and was released. Both women were taken to the Marion County Jail where they await the setting of bail. They were each formally charged Wednesday with Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance.
