(Cairo, IL)  —  Some of the workers at the Alexander County Housing Authority are losing their jobs, others are just losing their union benefits. Managers at the Department of Housing and Urban Development yesterday sent a letter to 19 people still on the payroll at the troubled southern Illinois housing authority informing them that their jobs are being eliminated. The letter says 15 of them can apply for new jobs, but there will be sizable pay cuts. HUD is in the process of closing two of Alexander County’s decrepit housing complexes and moving the people who live out of the area.
