(MT. VERNON, IL) — A Mt. Vernon man was uninjured Wednesday morning in a fiery crash on the Route 161 Extension in rural Iuka. According to the Kell Fire Protection District, James Fields was traveling on the Route 161 Extension around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning when about a quarter mile west of the Pleasant Grove Church his 2001 Chevy Blazer ran off the road and struck a power pole. The Blazer burst into flames following the impact and was ultimately destroyed. The bottom of the power pole also caught fire and while charred does not need replacing. Fields managed to get out of the vehicle on his own and was not injured in the crash. Kell firefighters and Marion County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash.
