(SALEM, IL) — A 23-year-old Memphis, Tennessee was arrested Friday night in Centralia after he was reportedly sleeping at the Amtrak station with an AK47 assault rifle with a fully loaded 30 round clip in his lap. Major A. Vaughn was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, and disorderly conduct. Centralia police responded to a 911 call reporting a man sitting against the wall of the train station and holding a gun. Upon their arrival, officers were able to confirm the report and move into the station before Vaughn woke up. He complied with officers’ orders to take his hands off the weapon and place them in the air, before and officer kicked the gun away. Vaughn reportedly told officers he has an active carry permit in Tennessee and was unaware he couldn’t carry the weapon in Illinois. Police say Vaughn should have been taught in training class the laws involving carrying guns out of state. They also noted it is illegal in Illinois to carry weapons in a mass transit building.
