Illinois Man Killed After Attack On Congressmen

(Chicago, IL) — The downstate Illinois man who reportedly opened fire on Republican congressmen during their morning baseball practice has a history of backing Democratic candidates and issues. Sixty-six-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville was fatally wounded by police after he fired numerous shots at a ballfield in Alexandria, Virginia. He wounded congressman Steve Scalise and several others. The “New York Times” quotes Hodgkinson’s brother as saying he was distraught over the election of Donald Trump. The “Belleville News-Democrat” reports Hodgkinson belonged to a number of anti-Republican groups, including one called “Terminate the Republican Party.”  Earlier this week, Hodgkinson posted an angry message about President Trump on Facebook. Federal agents swarmed Hodgkinson’s home on the outskirts of the St. Louis suburbs Wednesday morning. His Facebook page also included statements of support for Senator Bernie Sanders, for whom he reportedly volunteered in the last election. Authorities believe Hodgkinson had lived in his van near the scene of the shooting in Alexandria since March and kept mostly to himself.
