(INA, IL) – A Mt. Vernon woman is dead and another is injured after a head on collision Sunday on Interstate 57 near Ina. According to Illinois State Police, around 12:56 p.m., an automobile driven by a 25 year old Energy man was traveling northbound on I-57 near milepost 81 in Jefferson County.  An automobile driven by an 18 year old Emma Caserotti was traveling southbound on I-57 at the same location.  For an unknown reason, the northbound vehicle traveled through the center median and into the southbound lanes of traffic, striking the Caserotti vehicle head on.  Caserotti suffered fatal injuries in the accident and a passenger, 18 year old Tristen Sharp of Mt. Vernon, was transported to hospital along with the 25 year old driver of the northbound vehicle and his 22 year old female passenger from Carbondale.  I-57 southbound was closed for approximately 5 hours during the traffic crash investigation. Both vehicle sustained major damages and were towed from the scene. The names of the driver and passenger of the northbound automobile are being withheld at this time. The investigation continues by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit and Zone 7 Investigations.
