(Washington, IL) — Republican Illinois Congressman John Shimkus is offering his own suggestions for filling U.S. Attorney vacancies in the state, but Democrat Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth can’t be by-passed in the process. The president has the power to name U.S. Attorneys, and in the past has consulted with the state’s senators on those choices. The White House will review Shimkus’ suggestions, but will also take into account the results of screening committees that Durbin and Duckworth have set up to find candidates. The senators also have the power to block hearings on any nominee for prosecutor or federal judge.
