(Washington, DC)  —  Illinois’ U.S. Senators are blaming federal housing authorities for allowing public housing in Cairo to essentially fall apart. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth both say the Alexander County Housing Authority shares some blame for a pair of decrepit housing complexes in Cairo. But the two said in a letter last week that HUD officials are to blame because they didn’t keep a better eye on Alexander County as it spent money that was supposed to go toward its housing units. Nearly 200 families are being moved out of the apartments in Cairo, HUD says their homes are beyond repair.
