(CARLYLE, IL) — The death of a 20-year-old Trenton woman is under investigation as her family hopes her death brings a better understanding of heroin addiction. Zoë Conley died Wednesday after a long battle with heroin addiction. Her obituary says, “Zoë suffered for most of her teenage years from a heroin addiction, a disease that finally took her life after many attempts at recovery,” The Trenton Sun is owned and operated by her parents, Mike and Sybil Conley. The obituary is posted on the Sun’s Facebook page and comments praise the Conleys for having courage to be open about their daughter’s addiction and raise awareness about the heroin epidemic. 911 was called from Zoë’s home around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday after she was found unconscious. According to Clinton County Coroner Phillip Moss, Zoë was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, where she was pronounced dead at 6:05 a.m. Some police agencies and coroners across the country have begun to treat every heroin-overdose death as a homicide. According to a press release Thursday from Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon and Marion County State’s Attorney Bill Milner, in Illinois, a person who provides illegal drugs that cause a death can be charged with drug-induced homicide, a class X felony. The press release also said Marion County will now treat every heroin overdose death as a homicide.
