Illinois treasurer returns Purple Heart to WWII vet’s family

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Illinois officials have returned a Purple Heart medal to the daughter of a late World War II veteran. According to a news release, State Treasurer Michael Frerichs returned the medal this week to Constance Barr at a ceremony in Peoria. She’s the daughter of Corporal Edward H. Dunn. He died in 1970 at the age of 61. The treasurer’s office is the custodian of unclaimed property, including lost bank accounts and forgotten safe deposit boxes. The office says in a news release that it has over 100 unclaimed military medals. Dunn’s medal was in a safe deposit box. Dunn, who was a Peoria resident, enlisted in the Army in 1943. He was deployed the following year. He also served as the mayor of Bellevue from 1954 to 1969.
