WOLF LAKE, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois high school teacher has won a statewide award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for her work teaching citizenship. Jamie Nash-Mayberry is a social sciences teacher at Shawnee High School. The Southern Illinoisan reports she is the Smart/Maher Veterans of Foreign Wars Illinois Citizenship Education Teacher. Nash-Mayberry created a student government league, helps with an annual Veterans Day program and led students in creating a memorial wall that lists the names of veterans. She also plans mock elections and has student recite the Pledge of Allegiance daily. John Metzger is VFW District 15 commander. He says Nash-Mayberry is “dedicated to the idea of helping the kids learn what citizenship and community is all about.” Nash-Mayberry credits Shawnee “for allowing me to explore new ideas.”
