(MT. VERNON, IL) — The Mt. Vernon City Council met Monday evening. Among items on the agenda, the city manager requested permission to seek bids for the Peek, Last, and Rufus Streets Storm Sewer projects, as well as the Brownsville & Harlan Road storm sewer project, the Lake Terrace Northeast resurfacing project, and the South 28th Street sanitary sewer project, which were all accepted. The City Attorney gave a second reading of an ordinance annexing real estate to the City of Mt. Vernon, which the motion was accepted, but not seconded and thus dies in council.  The council approved a pair of rezoning ordinances and moved to postpone indefinitely a first reading of an ordinance revising open burning. A resolution was approved for a subordination agreement with SBA Financing related to the Weedy Acres LLC Development. The Mayor announced the reappointments of Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent as the Emergency Management Agency Coordinator and Chris Mendenhall to the Police Pension Board. He also presented the Mt. Vernon Police Department Merit Award to Sergeant Vic Koontz and Detective Justin Haney. Finally, the Council discussed the opening of the 7th Street rail crossing and a motion directing city managers to draft an ordinance repealing the public utilities capital improvement fee. That fee will remain in place after a 3-2 vote from Council until a report from the Blue Ribbon Committee is completed and presented to come up with an alternate solution.
