(Chicago, IL) — Governor Rauner says he would accept a portion of a controversial abortion bill, but would reject the part that GOP conservatives find more objectionable. Rauner said Friday that he’d accept a bill that guaranteed that abortions would remain legal in Illinois if Roe vs. Wade were ever overturned. However, he’s opposed to expanding insurance coverage for abortions to include state employees and women on Medicaid. Democrats approved a bill that contained both provisions, but haven’t sent it to Rauner’s desk yet. Rauner accused House Speaker Michael Madigan of adding the insurance portion of the bill to create political problems for him.
