Dems Put Hold On Abortion Bill

(Springfield, IL) — Illinois Senate Democrats are waiting before they send a controversial abortion bill to Governor Rauner’s desk. Senate sponsor Don Harmon of Oak Park says the move is designed to give Rauner more time to reconsider his pledge to veto the bill that expands insurance coverage for abortions to include state employees and women on Medicaid. Rauner’s opposition is a reversal of his position during the campaign supporting the expansion of access to abortions for poor women and others. Supporters don’t have the votes to override a likely veto, but holding the bill gives Democrats more time to exploit Rauner’s opposition politically.
