(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon woman has pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony charge against her in exchange for a more serious Class X charge of aggravated battery to a child being dismissed. Takia T. Bell pleaded guilty to a charge of Class 2 felony aggravated domestic battery involving strangling. In exchange for her guilty plea, a more serious Class X felony charge of aggravated battery to a child under the age of 13 was dismissed, as was a Class 4 felony charge of aggravated battery of a peace officer, and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer. According to police reports, on January 21, Bell caused great bodily harm to a child under the age of 13 by striking the child about the face and left ear and caused additional injury by allegedly strangling the child. The arrest report also says Bell walked toward a police officer while holding a knife at her side and even after the officer drew his weapon and commanded to, she would not drop the knife. She remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $250,000 and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 9. A Class 2 felony is punishable by between 3 and 7 years in prison.
