(SALEM, IL) — A 57-year-old Centralia man charged in Marion County Court with Class X felony driving under the influence filed an open plea of guilty Wednesday to lesser felony DUI-related charges. Dickie D. Whipple was arrested in January by Centralia police over for what was at least his sixth DUI arrest. In addition to the Class X felony DUI charge, Whipple was also charged with Class 2 felony third DUI, Class 4 felony driving while license revoked or suspended from a DUI more than four but less than nine times, misdemeanor DUI, and was issued multiple traffic citations. He has remained in the Marion County Jail since his arrest, with bail set at $30,000. In exchange for his open plea of guilt, the Class X felony and the misdemeanor were dismissed and Whipple was convicted of the Class 2 and Class 4 felonies. He is scheduled to be sentenced on those charges June 7. A Class 2 felony conviction is punishable by between 3 and 7 years in prison without extended sentencing and a Class 4 is punishable by between 1 and 3 years. Whipple was last sentenced in 2008 to 4-years in prison after being convicted in Marion County of his fifth DUI.
