(Chicago, IL) — A new ranking of hospital safety across the country is dropping Illinois to 23rd place, down from 15th last fall. The report by The Leapfrog Group grades hospitals for patient safety then ranks the states according to the percentage of hospitals earning As. The grades are based on hospital staffing levels plus other measurements, including the rates of hospital-based infections, patient falls, accidental punctures and cuts, and deaths from treatable complications. Thirty-eight of the 113 Illinois hospitals graded received As while none received Fs. A spokesman for the Illinois Health and Hospital Association dismissed the ranking, calling it a crude measure of hospital safety.
