Carbondale Approves ‘Welcoming Community’ Status

(Carbondale, IL)  —  City leaders in Carbondale are stopping just short of declaring themselves a sanctuary city. But only just. Carbondale’s city council on Monday approved an official ‘welcoming community’ designation that’s essentially the same as a sanctuary city declaration. Mayor Mike Henry says the city is dedicated to all people in the community, regardless of their immigration status. And the city is vowing not to help federal immigration enforcement.
