(BENTON, IL) — Benton firefighters, with help from West City, West Frankfort, Sesser and Ewing-Northern, were busy late Sunday night putting out a fire at a vacant home on Madison Street. Benton Fire Chief Shane Cockrum tells us when firefighters arrived shortly after 11:30; they reported heavy fire throughout the single story house. Firefighters were on the scene for two-and-a-half hours containing and putting out the fire that threatened a home to the south. No injuries were reports. The cause of the fire is undetermined, but may be suspicious. The state fire marshal has been contacted.
