(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 23-year-old Mt. Vernon man is scheduled to be sentenced this afternoon in Jefferson County court for the 2011 murder of a Mt. Vernon cab driver. Damondros James is one of four men charged with the murder nearly six years ago of 75-year-old Charles Ellis during a botched robbery. James pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in his case and at one point wanted his attorney to file a motion to withdraw his guilty plea but the motion was never filed. Of the three other men charged in connection with murdering Ellis in his cab, only one has been sentenced. Demandre Black pleaded guilty in 2015 to aggravated battery with a firearm and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Christopher Wells, who was a juvenile at the time of the murder, has pleaded guilty but has not been sentenced. Mark Taylor Jr., is still awaiting trial on three counts first-degree murder. Taylor’s case has been repeatedly delayed since it was first filed in May 2011. The latest delay came last month when his latest attorney filed a motion for a change of judge, which was approved. Taylor is next scheduled in court Monday for a status hearing. He has remained in the Jefferson County Jail since his 2011 arrest, with bail set at $300,000.
