(BENTON, IL) — A two-vehicle crash took place around 2:45 Tuesday afternoon on I-57 north of Benton. Illinois State Police say 39-year-old Scott W. Brown of Ogden,  Illinois was driving his pickup truck north in the left lane at  milepost 76.5 when he said he fell asleep. He drifted into the path of a semi traveling in the right lane driven by 48-year-old H.P. Whitley of Desoto, Texas. Brown’s truck struck the rear most trailer of two attached to Whitley’s semi and then left the roadway to the left, entered the median and overturned onto its top. The left lane of I-57 was closed for 30 minutes so Brown’s truck could be removed. Whitley and his passenger, 48-year-old Kenneth J. Kirkpatrick of Arlington, Texas, were not hurt. Brown was sent by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Brown was charged with improper lane usage.
