Mary Ellen Johnson, 89, of Mt. Vernon passed away on Sunday 4/2/2017. Mary Ellen was the daughter of Charlie and Rheba (Pettypool) Whisenhunt. On October 29, 1951, she was united in marriage to Charles Lee Johnson. She is survived by Michael (Leona) Johnson, Diane (Tim) Van Matre, Alan (Patty) Johnson all of Mt. Vernon, Teresa (Eric) Woodside of Ashley and Lynnette Reaney of Woodlawn, IL. Grandchildren, Lori Johnson, Marcie Caldwell, Christine Bolerjack, Kristi Loss, Jason Van Matre, Shad Van Matre, Amanda Gaines, Jennifer Rutledge, Steven Rutledge, Kyle Woodside, Summer Woodside, Amanda Brown, Tabitha Reaney, Mollie Hente, Shelby Reaney and Haley Reaney. Several Great-Grandchildren, nieces & nephews. She is also survived by 2 sisters Edna (Vernon) Denham of Minooka and Charlene (Charles) Williams of Trenton, IL and one sister in law Alice Whisenhunt of Monroe, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers Lester and Melvin Whisenhunt. One sister Sue Wolf and one Grandson Jason Bolerjack. Prior to marriage Mary taught school for 4 years in a one room school house. She was very active in her children’s school years, Girl Scouts and PTO. She was a member of T.O.P.S. club for several years. She also sold Avon for several years until failing health. Mary Ellen was also a member of Southside Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She loved people, traveling with her family, flowers and yard work. She will be missed by all her knew her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 5th at the Southside Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Jerry Montgomery & Rev. Calvin Trotter officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodlawn. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Church. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be sent to Southside Missionary Baptist Church.  The Johnston Funeral Home in Ina is in charge of arrangements
