(BONNIE, IL) — A 37-year-old Mt. Vernon man was killed in a one-vehicle crash Sunday on Illinois 37 near Bonnie. David Mabry was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports Mabry was traveling southbound around 7:21 p.m. Sunday on Highway 37 when his Dodge pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into an Ameren power pole approximately 118 feet off the highway. An Ina police officer and Jefferson County Fire Protection District firefighters arrived on the scene just a few minutes later and discovered power lines were down on top of the truck with one person apparently trapped inside. Attempts to raise a response from the person – later identified as Mabry – were unsuccessful. First responders were unable to extract Mabry from the truck until Ameren arrived nearly an hour later and removed the power lines from the vehicle. Sheriff’s reports indicate alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon. The crash resulted in a power outage for several hours in a section of Jefferson County.
