(MT. VERNON, IL) — Authorities with the Mt. Vernon Police Department responded to the 1100 block of Wescott Saturday at 3:19 a.m. to a report of gunshots fired and after further investigation made an arrest. Authorities arrested 31 year old Jeffrey Brown of Mt. Vernon for reckless discharge of a firearm after a firearm and ammunition was seized during the investigation.  Brown was transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center with a bond of $100,000 with 10% applying. Brown is considered innocent until proven guilty in court. Brown pled guilty in 2015 to charges of domestic battery with bodily harm and had a charge of aggravated battery with great bodily harm amended to a charge of unlawful restraint. For that offense, he received 24 months of conditional discharge. Brown was also charged and sentenced on a charge of 2nd Degree Murder in the shooting death of 23 year old Micki Johns in Mt. Vernon on the afternoon of Saturday August 23, 2003. He was first released on parole in 2012, but subsequently violated the terms of his release and was readmitted to the department of corrections where he was then released in 2014 after serving the remainder of his sentence.
