(MT. VERNON, IL) — The Jefferson County jury trial of a 29-year-old Mt. Vernon man continues into its second week today, after his wife testified last week that he never spanked or disciplined a 3-year-old toddler who was in their care. Michael Belmont is accused of the 2014 beating of a 3-year-old boy in his family’s care, causing serious brain injuries to the boy that have resulted his permanent disability. While Kaysie Belmont, Michael Belmont’s wife testified Friday on behalf of the defense that her husband did not injure the toddler, testimony provided by the Belmont’s son indicated Michael Belmont would spank the toddler using his hands and a belt. Kaysie Belmont entered into a plea agreement earlier this month where multiple charges against her in connection with the toddler’s injuries were dismissed in exchange for her guilty plea go a reduced charge of reckless conduct for not seeking immediate medical care for the toddler. She was sentenced to 30 months probation and was given no jail time for her guilty plea, but agreed to testify honestly against her husband during his trial.
