(TRENTON, IL) — Within two hours of smoke first being noticed at the Dollar General Store in Trenton, the building was almost completely destroyed by flames that were fanned by high winds Sunday. The first crew from Sugar Creek Township Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after the first signs of smoke were reported around 1 p.m. Mutual aid was quickly requested of Aviston Fire Department and Emerald Mound-Lebanon. Clinton County and Sugar Creek provided emergency management and medical services, but no injuries were reported. Approximately 50 emergency workers were on the scene of the fire, bringing eight trucks to battle the blaze. Wind gusts estimated at 45 to 50 miles an hour fed the flames, which were reported to shoot nearly 100 feet in the air at times. The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for the area Sunday afternoon.
