(BENTON, IL) — Mike Andrews is no longer Benton’s top cop. The Benton City Council voted to accept Andrew’s resignation as police chief during a special meeting Thursday morning. It went into effect Thursday afternoon. Andrews is not going anywhere though. He will remain on the police force as an investigator. He’ll start that role today. Council members appointed Kyle Melvin to be acting chief. Melvin has been with the police department since 2008 and has been an investigator since 2012. City officials say Melvin will serve as acting chief until a permanent replacement can be found. Andrews became acting chief in 2011 after Chief Lance Charleston resigned. Andrews became police chief permanently afterwards.
