Reaction To Rauner Sharply Divided

(Springfield, IL) — Reaction to Governor Rauner’s budget address is predictably split along party lines. Democratic Senate President John Cullerton said Rauner should not get emergency budget cutting powers, while House Speaker Michael Madigan said Democrats have already tried to compromise with Rauner repeatedly. Rauner’s call for pro-business, anti-union reforms was applauded by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association but ridiculed by various unions for teachers and state workers. During a campaign stop in Chicago, Democrat Hillary Clinton took a shot at Rauner, saying his plan would turn Illinois around to the days of the robber barons of the nineteenth century.
