Rauner Wants Budget Emergency Powers

(Springfield, IL) — Governor Rauner used his second budget address to scold and threaten Democratic lawmakers over the budget impasse, but also to call on them to put political differences aside for the good of the state. Rauner challenged lawmakers to either negotiate with him over the reforms he says are necessary for the state’s economy or give him emergency powers to make the spending cuts that will be necessary. Rauner blasted the effort to force a settlement of the contract dispute with the state’s largest union and said the true solution to the budget crisis is to reform government so the state’s economy will grow and tax revenues will rise for the good of everyone.
