(MT. VERNON, IL) — It’s been six years since the shooting death of Mt. Vernon teen Deon Figgins. On Tuesday, 29 year old Marventi Palmer was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of the youth. The state dismissed two counts of first degree murder in exchange for the plea of guilt on the second degree charge. Palmer will have to complete his current sentence on a 2013 drug conviction in Jefferson County before the new sentencing begins. The sentence also carries two years of mandatory supervised release following incarceration.
