(SALEM, IL) — A 31-year-old Chicago man charged in Marion County Court with heroin related offenses was sentenced in court Thursday to the lesser of two charges against him. Carl Edwards was facing charges of Class 1 felony manufacture with the intent to deliver between 1 and 15 grams of heroin, and Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance. Edwards pleaded guilty to the Class 4 charge and was sentenced to 138 days in jail, with credit for 138 days served, 2-years probation, and ordered to complete drug and alcohol treatment, as well as pay court costs. He was released Thursday afternoon from the Marion County Jail. Edwards was arrested in September when a vehicle in which he was a passenger was pulled over by Marion County Sheriff’s deputies in a traffic stop that ultimately led the deputies to discover 14 grams of heroin while searching the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Corissa Thomas, of Salem, pleaded guilty in December to Class 1 felony manufacture with the intent to deliver between 1 and 15 grams of heroin. She was sentenced to 4-years probation and ordered to pay court costs. Per her plea bargain, Thomas agreed to testify honestly about Edwards, but his case never went to trial.
